Leadership thinking that gets you ahead!
One interesting strategy that leaders use to get ahead in the course of their business activity is positive imaging. It really is a situation where those concerned focus on picturing the possibilities that an organization could achieve; first in the minds of the people concerned, later in form of models or pictures that are drawn up for illustration. Medical, social and psychological research have all shown that human beings have the ability to influence and to some extent create their own future. The knowledge we are referring to here has a direct relevance of a proper understanding of how leaders in business, politics and human relations lead and why their visions of the future are so important.
Some palpable evidence is found in medical science with the placebo which is known to cure ailments even though it is as worthless as chalk and has no medicinal elements. In the case of the placebo, the real cure is in the focus on health or recovery that comes from the human body when a drug that is supposed to cure is used. The other part of this is found in what is known as the halo effect: if you decide to consistently treat a person you know as bright and intelligent long enough, the expectation is that he would become bright and intelligent sooner than you think.
The future of your organization and the possibilities there-in are constructed first within the imagination of the people concerned. If the pictures are clear and strong enough, they will eventually come to light. The imaginations of people are like the values, beliefs and plans. The question arises: How can we move from vision to reality? Well it all starts with heliotropic thinking. Have a picture of what you wish to achieve in your mind and then focus on it. There is a strong tendency to evolve in the direction of positive images that are anticipated by us.
Here's an assignment for you and those who manage parts of your business. First, draw up a picture of the organization as it is now. Once you have done that, the next thing is to draw up a picture of how you wish the organization would be in the future. The second part might require some artistic talent and we might have to take our time and do some thorough descriptions and analysis to get the clear picture we need. Its called creative visualization. Often the positive picture that we create is what we end up getting. The picture we created has an overwhelming lure and we are drawn towards achieving what we have created. It sounds rather simplistic, but its true.
